The Upward Call Of God

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 3:14

It seems like there’s a trend in the Church to focus on the Here and Now while downplaying Heaven. Some would like us to believe it’s now that matters, not what happens in the future. I would like to remind you that the Apostle Paul says the prize for the Christian is in “the upward call” of God. I can only say that now is so temporary, and eternity so everlasting, that in my mind it’s foolish to question where a Christian should have their focus.

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. -Colossians 3:1

Why would the Apostle Paul write these words to the Christians in his day? Because just like us they had the tendency to focus more on the things of Earth, than the things of Heaven.

The trend to focus on the Earth instead of Heaven is not a biblical one. It comes out of our earthly nature, not the new nature that is “born from above”.

Our worldy focus shows that the Church has lost sight of the eternal and has before it’s eyes the temporary. This should not be the ordinary condition for a child of God, and it’s one to be repented of.
